Never matched bet before?
HorseMovesUK assumes you're comfortable with betting exchanges — backs, lays, liability, the lot. If that's all new to you, this page is your on-ramp: a plain-English explanation of matched betting, and a beginner-friendly place to actually practise it.
Matched betting isn't tipping.
You're not trying to predict a winner. You're using a bookmaker's own promotion against itself, so the outcome of the race becomes close to irrelevant.
"Potential" is doing real work in that sentence — matched betting reduces risk by covering both outcomes, it does not remove it. Odds move, promotions have terms, and mistakes cost money. It is a skill, not a guarantee.
Predicting a winner vs. matching a promotion
Trying to pick the winner
- Outcome depends entirely on which horse crosses the line first
- One bet, one direction, one result
- Skill helps, but variance is high race to race
Matched betting
- You back and lay the same selection, covering both sides
- The target is the bookmaker's promotion, not the result
- Which horse wins matters far less to your outcome
Six terms and you're fluent.
Learn it properly with Back Yourself Betting
Back Yourself Betting (BYB) is a separate matched-betting service — not owned by HorseMovesUK — that we recommend as the most beginner-friendly way to actually learn and practise backing and laying, with the calculators and step-by-step offer guides to match.
The bit most beginners miss: matched betting isn't just the first sign-up offer and then you stop. BYB's Daily Offers are the long game — a running list of smaller, repeatable opportunities you can work through once you know the basics, which is exactly the habit Step 3 builds on.
14 days free Premium access, then BYB's normal membership price if you choose to continue. HorseMovesUK may receive a referral benefit via this link.
